I love the autonomy I have and enjoy a great work/life balance

Sarah's thoughts on NHBC

How long have you been with NHBC?

Nine months

What’s your day to day role in the company?

As a senior structural engineer I review technical submissions for our warranty products and also provide Building Control assessments. As part of this I support NHBC Building Inspectors by attending site meetings with our builder customers. I also provide assistance to our Claims department, investigating the causes of damage to properties where claims have been logged by homeowners and, where necessary, I develop remedial solutions.

What motivated you to join NHBC?

After spending 10 years working in design consultancy I was ready to see another side of the industry while still keeping involved in engineering.  The flexibility that NHBC offers in being able to work from home enables me to spend more time with my family and so the combination of the two was too good an opportunity to miss!

As a fairly recent joiner, what would you say about the training you’ve received?

Over my first few months with the company I was very impressed with the care that was taken with my training needs. Far from feeling isolated at home, my colleagues ensured, with one-to-one training, that I was familiar and comfortable with the systems before being let loose by myself! The range of training opportunities for career development are vast and NHBC lets you take control and manage your onward career training at a pace that suits you.

What do you enjoy about working at NHBC?

I enjoy the autonomy that NHBC gives me in managing my own workload, the excellent work-life balance and the opportunities for development that are open to me. Oh – and only having a 2 minute commute to my desk is pretty good too! The variety of the work is also enjoyable, especially claims investigations which are all different – you never know what you’re going to get!
