NHBC offered me professional independence in a home-based technical role

Caroline's thoughts on NHBC

How long have you been at NHBC?
I joined NHBC as one of the first Trainee Building Inspectors in 2002, having completed a BA (Hons) in History and a Master’s Degree in Heritage Studies.

How did you find the shift from academics to such a technical role?
Honestly, at first it was quite daunting going from an academic environment to a technically demanding, male-dominated position. However, my academic background really enabled me to approach the technical demands of the role – and to this day it’s given me the ability to learn and apply the constant changes in technical knowledge needed to work here.

How has NHBC supported your personal and professional development?
I’m privileged to have a home-based position that allows me the professional independence to work with our customers on a daily basis within a supportive team and manager, as well as a wider framework of professionals. NHBC has supported and developed me with a wide variety of training too, including my Level 4 NVQ in Site Inspection. And, due to the unique nature of NHBC’s business, I applied for a Building Inspector position in Cambridgeshire in 2004 and was able to relocate with my husband back home where we have since had our first child.
