Caroline's thoughts on NHBC
When did you join NHBC?
I joined NHBC as one of the first Trainee Building Inspectors in 2002, having completed a BA (hons) in History and a Master’s Degree in Heritage Studies. I started my career in Kent – and it was quite daunting to go from an academic environment to a technically demanding, male dominated position. However, my academic background really enabled me to approach the technical demands of the role – and to this day it’s given me the ability to learn and apply the constant changes in technical knowledge needed to work here. NHBC has supported and developed me with a wide variety of training too, including my Level 4 NVQ in Site Inspection.
I’m privileged to have a home based position that allows me the professional independence to work with our customers on a daily basis within a supportive team and manager, as well as a wider framework of professionals. Working for NHBC has helped me grow both professionally and personally. And, due to the unique nature of NHBC’s business, I applied for a Building Inspector position in Cambridgeshire in 2004 and was able to relocate with my husband back home where we have since had our first child.
