In addition to a competitive salary, all NHBC staff have access to a wide range of additional benefits. We ensure our packages are attractive to current and potential employees across the UK.

Pay and benefits

In order to recognise the valuable contribution that our employees make to our business, we have structured our pay and benefits packages to ensure our employees are fully supported and rewarded at NHBC. We frequently benchmark our salaries, bonus scheme and benefits against the wider market to ensure our packages are attractive to current and potential employees across the UK. We believe we were the first Milton Keynes-based employer to offer equalised Maternity, Paternity and Adoption Leave and Pay. This combined with a range of excellent benefits including our “Additional Holiday Purchase Scheme" and “always happy to talk flexible working” approach, firmly establishes NHBC as a modern, family-friendly workplace, and a leading employer of choice for all kinds of people, right across the UK.

Competitive Salary

Pay is set based on market data and reviewed each year against industry benchmarks, in conjunction with our Staff Association.

Our pay reviews are linked to performance – so high achievers are rewarded with greater pay increases.

We pay regional weighting allowances to those working in London and the South East as well as a remote worker allowance for staff in home or field–based roles.

Living Wage Employer

NHBC is proud to be a Living Wage accredited employer.

living-wage-logo

The Living Wage is calculated according to the basic cost of living in the UK and is updated each year.

Every employee at NHBC earns at least the Living Wage.

Bonus

We have a competitive bonus scheme, designed to reward both what you do and how you do it. With the ability to achieve up to 150% of your on-target bonus potential based on individual and company performance, the scheme is designed to incentivise and reward high performance.

High Street Discounts

Through an online portal, employees can take advantage of discounts with supermarkets, high street retailers, travel suppliers and much more.

Salary Exchange Benefits

We offer a wide range of salary exchange benefits including:

  • Gym Membership
  • Cycle to Work

Employees can join these schemes to take advantage of Tax and National Insurance savings.

Pension & Financial Wellbeing

Almost all employees are members of our Defined Contribution scheme.

Our aim is to support our employees in saving for a comfortable retirement. The NHBC scheme has been ranked as top quality by the Pension and Lifetime Savings Association and we have held the Pension Quality Mark Plus accreditation for several years. This has been awarded to just over 100 schemes in the UK – demonstrating the competitive employer contributions, clear communication and strong governance.

Holiday Entitlement

NHBC’s annual leave offering is a generous minimum of 25 days per annum for full time employees, with option to purchase up to one additional week each year.

Additional Holiday Purchase Scheme:

This scheme allows every employee to purchase up to one week’s additional holiday and is intended to support employees in balancing their home and work life. You might want to spend more time with family, be planning a special trip or a wedding, or you might simply want to take more time off – there doesn’t have to be a reason! Requests to purchase additional holiday take place every year during March, and deductions will start from April for a period of 12 months.

Family Friendly

Today’s modern life can be a challenge and NHBC is committed to providing all employees with choice and flexibility to balance their working life with the needs of the business. We also understand that starting or growing your family changes your life so we’ve got a range of support available to you to make the most of this time.

Maternity, Paternity and Adoption Leave & Pay: We offer an equalised and enhanced approach to Maternity, Paternity and Adoption Leave and Pay. This means all our NHBC parents benefit from up to 52 weeks leave, with the first 13 weeks on full pay, regardless of how they have become a parent. This applies to all NHBC parents who have reached 26 weeks continuous service with us, 15 weeks before their baby’s due date or child’s placement date in the case of adoption. We offer this benefit as we believe that all parents should be given the chance to spend time bonding with their child in the early days, and we believe that everyone should have the option to share the care between themselves and their partners. You can spend the time you need with your family while still having a successful career at NHBC – regardless of gender or circumstance.

Shared Parental Leave: Sometimes parents want to split the 52 week maternity leave period between them; we are happy to accommodate this. NHBC will make pension contributions on your behalf whilst you’re receiving ShPP, up to the value of your pre leave contributions.

Ordinary Parental Leave: Every employee who is the parent of a child under the age of 18 is able to take up to 18 weeks’ unpaid ordinary parental leave before, or on the date of, the child’s 18th birthday. This also applies to the parents of an adopted child. You can take a maximum of four weeks per year per child taken in weekly blocks.

Career Breaks: At NHBC we recognise that individuals have different needs at different stages of their working lives. We can provide the opportunity, wherever practically possible, for you to take a career break from your job in order to fulfil personal goals, to acquire new skills or to manage priorities within your personal life.

Always happy to talk flexible working: Flexible working means different things to different people and can be accommodated in different ways across our varied roles here at NHBC. We support employees to work flexibly in many different ways including home working, field working and both formal and informal flexible working arrangements You can ask for a change to your hours or working pattern as and when you need to – we can’t promise to accommodate every request but if we can, we will. NHBC is absolutely committed to considering all requests against our business needs. If it’s important to you, then it’s important to us.

Managing our miles

We have recently re-benchmarked our car fleet for CO2 and continue to compare favourably with fleets of similar sizes with a CO2/km average of 112. We offer enhanced business mileage rates for staff who share cars on business journeys and we encourage active travel with the provision of cycle storage and changing facilities as well as free cycle servicing.

Working environment

Having achieved BREEAM excellent certification in 2009 for the extension to our head office in Milton Keynes, we are continually improving our office space to bring our working environment up to a minimum of the same standards – for example, a recent installation of upgraded photosensitive lighting is delivering circa 40% energy savings.
