Pay and benefits
In order to recognise the valuable contribution that our employees make to our business, we have structured our pay and benefits packages to ensure our employees are fully supported and rewarded at NHBC. We frequently benchmark our salaries, bonus scheme and benefits against the wider market to ensure our packages are attractive to current and potential employees across the UK.
Pay is set based on market data and reviewed each year against industry benchmarks, in conjunction with our Staff Association.
Our pay reviews are linked to performance – so high achievers are rewarded with greater pay increases.
We pay regional weighting allowances to those working in London and the South East as well as a remote worker allowance for staff in home or field–based roles.
Living Wage Employer
NHBC is proud to be a Living Wage accredited employer.
The Living Wage is calculated according to the basic cost of living in the UK and is updated each year.
Every employee at NHBC earns at least the Living Wage.
We have a competitive bonus scheme, designed to reward both what you do and how you do it. With the ability to achieve up to 150% bonus based on individual and company performance, the scheme is designed to incentivise and reward high performance.
High Street Discounts
Through an online portal, employees can take advantage of discounts with supermarkets, high street retailers, travel suppliers and much more.

Pension & Financial Wellbeing
Almost all employees are members of our Defined Contribution scheme.
Our aim is to support our employees in saving for a comfortable retirement. The NHBC scheme has been ranked as top quality by the Pension and Lifetime Savings Association and we have held the Pension Quality Mark Plus accreditation for several years. This has been awarded to just over 100 schemes in the UK – demonstrating the competitive employer contributions, clear communication and strong governance.
Many roles at NHBC attract a Company car. Our choice list is regularly reviewed and carefully balanced to meet the needs of our drivers when they are at work, but also in their home lives too.

Maternity Leave: All pregnant employees are able to take 52 weeks maternity leave and depending on your length of service will also be entitled to Maternity Pay. Pay is further enhanced for employees with more than two years’ service.
Paternity Leave: An employee who becomes a dad while working for us can take two weeks paternity leave. As long as you have 26 weeks service with us by the 15th week before the expected week of childbirth, you will qualify for full pay.
Shared Parental Leave: Sometimes parents want to split the 52 week maternity leave period between them; we are happy to accommodate this.
Adoption Leave: Employees who adopt are able to take 52 weeks adoption leave and, depending on your length of service, will also be entitled to Adoption Pay. Pay is further enhanced for employees with more than two years’ service.
Ordinary Parental Leave: Every employee who is the parent of a child under the age of 18 is able to take up to 18 weeks’ unpaid ordinary parental leave before, or on the date of, the child’s 18th birthday. This also applies to the parents of an adopted child. You can take a maximum of four weeks per year per child taken in weekly blocks.
Career Breaks: At NHBC we recognise that individuals have different needs at different stages of their working lives. We can provide the opportunity, wherever practically possible, for you to take a career break from your job in order to fulfil personal goals, to acquire new skills or to manage priorities within your personal life.
Smart Working: We know that sometimes employees need to request to change their working arrangements either on a permanent or temporary basis, perhaps to reduce their hours to take care of children or grandchildren after school, or perhaps a little adjustment to care for an elderly parent. NHBC is committed to considering all requests against our business needs. If it is important to you, then it is important to us.
Life Assurance is available to all employees,
up to 4 x salary cover.
Employee Assistance Programme
For the times that colleagues may have problems affecting their personal life, health and wellbeing, we offer confidential access to online, telephone and face to face support.
All employees have access to subsidised and comprehensive Private Medical Insurance. We also offer a cash plan and regular wellbeing initiatives such as flu jabs and mini health checks. Eye tests and a contribution towards glasses are available to all employees, not just those who use display screen equipment.
All staff can take up to two days a year to dedicate to community work and we encourage both individuals and teams to take this opportunity to share their skills with community groups and develop skills to bring back to the workplace.
Managing our miles
We have recently re-benchmarked our car fleet for CO2 and continue to compare favourably with fleets of similar sizes with a CO2/km average of 112. We offer enhanced business mileage rates for staff who share cars on business journeys and we encourage active travel with the provision of cycle storage and changing facilities as well as free cycle servicing.
Having achieved BREEAM excellent certification in 2009 for the extension to our head office in Milton Keynes, we are continually improving our office space to bring our working environment up to a minimum of the same standards – for example, a recent installation of upgraded photosensitive lighting is delivering circa 40% energy savings.
